"THE HARLEM BAKERY WORTH GOING UPTOWN FOR..." THRILLIST
our story.
:: It's all about the baking ::
Every morning, as New Yorkers across the city run to catch trains and onto subway cars, 79 year old Alvin Lee Smalls (affectionately known as Mr. Lee) arranges a mechanical fan to peek outside the front door of his Harlem bakery, blowing out the sweet scent of freshly baked buttery pastries to entice busy passers by to stop in and, hopefully buy, his pastries. Mr. Lee isn’t trying to become the next big TikTok sensation, “Now everyone’s a chef celebrity and selling boxed mixes, but that’s not me.”Despite the phenomenal press coverage Lee Lee’s Baked Goods has garnered lately, Mr. Smalls says none of it has given him a “big head.”
“It’s just about the love of baking good sweet.”
“We’ve been keeping our customers sweet since 1988, when I opened Lee Lee’s Baked Goods, and we’re going to keep doing it with love by hand."
